I've connected a Pharos GPS-500 USB SiRF III via a USB cable (amazingly
the thing even has it's very own microsoft badge, and spurious blue
LED. The blue LED is operating normally, and is not the reason for this
support request). NTPd is seeing the GPS data but not the PPS, based
on my reading of the gpsd manual (and website which seemed to be down
last night, glad to see it back up) and the 0 in reach for .GPS1..
My reading leads me to believe that SiRF III devices should be sending a
PPS, but NTPd doesn't see one. I used gpsctl to switch to binary
mode, and to increase the port speed, and was unable to do so (output
below). Is this particular GPS mouse not capable of anything more than
I'm getting? If so, anyone want to recommended a unit with a higher
port speeds and a more precise PPS. I've included output from dmesg,
gpsd, ntpq and gpsctl below.

Dmesg output below:
usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
USB Serial support registered for generic
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic

usb 4-1: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303

gpsd output
# gpsd -N -n -D 2 /dev/ttyUSB0
gpsd: launching (Version 2.37)
gpsd: listening on port 2947
gpsd: successfully connected to the DBUS system bus
gpsd: running with effective group ID 0

gpsd: opening GPS data source at '/dev/ttyUSB0'
gpsd: speed 4800, 8N1

ntpq output:

gpsctl output:
# gpsctl -b /dev/ttyUSB0

gpsctl: /dev/ttyUSB0 identified as a Generic NMEA at 4800.

PPS requires a dedicated wire. PPS can not operate over USB.
